Prevention of lithium-ion battery thermal runaway using polymer-substrate current collectors

Isolating electronically conducting material from internal short circuits is a promising way to prevent the onset of thermal runaway within lithium-ion cells. Here, metal-coated polymer current collector, which designed disconnect by withdrawing heating region, tested in 18650 In addition having lower mass and manufacturing costs, cells with collectors demonstrate reduced risk during nail penetration. High-speed synchrotron X-ray radiography nail-penetration testing, tandem pre- post-mortem computed tomography, provides insights into function collectors. The results are compared those standard commercial aluminum copper Cells aluminum-coated demonstrated 100% success prevention penetration, retaining cell voltage >4.00 V, while consistently experienced runaway.
